13-0 win 'part of growing the game', says United States of America captain

Desiree Ellis Banyana coach

The U.S. women's soccer team is 1-0 at the World Cup after a really big win.

Asked about the lopsided score, USA coach Jill Ellis wondered if a 10-0 victory in a men's World Cup would prompt the same questions.

After qualifying for the Women's World Cup in April 2018 and playing in a pair of Asian summer competitions, Thailand embarked on a nine-game tour, mostly against European competition, to prepare for the 2019 Women's World Cup, and it lost eight games. But they are facing criticism from some for continuing to exert maximum effort to score late in the contest, and for what critics have deemed to be excessive celebration for the late-match goals.

"For me it's disrespectful, it's disgraceful".

Even U.S. cable news has gotten in on the debate.

But, naysayers called the team's celebrations "classless", "disrespectful" and "disgusting", arguing they should have been more muted considering their soccer federation operates at a much higher level. "To be respectful to opponents is to play hard against opponents", Ellis said.

The last time the Americans played on the world's biggest stage, Lloyd had a hat-trick in the first 16 minutes and the U.S. beat Japan 5-2 in Canada for the trophy. Alongside Abby Wambach, she appeared on American Idol to announce that the season 14 victor would record the official song for Fox's coverage of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Thailand´s deflated coach Nuengruethai Sathongwien said she had no excuses, adding: "We accept that they are better". "Celebrate. Would you tell a men's team to not score or celebrate?" she tweeted.

Perhaps the harshest criticism of the USA came from Canadian analysts on TSN's World Cup show.

Retired American worldwide Taylor Twellman, now an ESPN analyst, tweeted he had zero problems with the scoreline given "this is THE tournament BUT celebrating goals (like #9) leaves a sour taste in my mouth like many of you". The match ended on a 13-0 for the United States, leaving their opponents in tears. But once you learn all the other factors that go into the athlete's pay, this "inequality" falls apart just like all the other gender "wage" gap claims.

Morgan was joined on the scoresheet by five other teammates.

The USWNT finished with an incredible 39 shots, 10 corners, and 75 percent possession in the rout.

Horan smashed in the third in the 32nd minute, but the floodgates really opened in the second half as Ellis's side scored four times in six minutes shortly after the restart. The previous record margin was Germany's 11-0 victory over Argentina in 2007.
