WoW Classic to release in August, closed beta begins May 15

Classic is a unique World of Warcraft experience that in 2006 created unprecedented fandom

That decision followed years of fans doing the same "behind" Blizzard's back, though their attempt to do so was an open secret-one that Blizzard battledaggressively.

Beginning on May 15, certain WoW players will be invited to "participate in a small-scale, focused closed beta test, helping ensure WoW Classic nails its goal of authenticity". But you can visit here to try an opt in to play WoW Classic before everyone else.

The Classic version reverts the game to how it was when the "Drums of War" update (patch 1.12) was released in August 2006, except it keeps numerous contemporary bells and whistles the current MMO benefits from.

The project's official 2017 announcement came with a brief WoW Classic testing period for BlizzCon attendees, which Ars can report largely resembled WoW's oldest version. Participants will be selected from a small pool of existing WoW players. And the WoW Classic account limits have also been explained.

"While opting-in to the beta is the primary way to make sure you're in the running to join the test it doesn't guarantee an invitation to the closed beta test".

World of Warcraft Classic, an instance of how the game was at launch before any of its numerous expansions launched, will be releasing on August 26-27 depending on region. But no matter what, the community of World of Warcraft players has been demanding Classic WoW for a while, and it the developers seem to be quite happy to deliver what they ask.

If you're eager to get in on the action you will be able to claim your character name for WoW Classic on the 13th August, and players with an active subscription or game time on their account can create up to three characters per account.

On those dates and times, players will get to begin exploring the continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms as they fight for the Horde or the Alliance.
