Why Manchester City could be banned from the Champions League

Pep Guardiola Manchester City 2018-19

Members of UEFA's financial control board will now meet to discuss what punishment the club should face if they are found guilty of breaking the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules that came into effect in 2011 but have often been ridiculed for their seemingly minimal impact on clubs' spending in recent years.

The claims were based on documents purportedly obtained by whistleblowers Football Leaks.

It is believed the footage was taken on the journey back from Brighton, where City won 4-1 to lift the Premier League trophy for the second consecutive season.

UEFA investigators have been looking into details published by German newspaper Der Spiegel to ascertain whether City contravened their regulations.

A report by the New York Times on Monday states that an investigation by the European football governing body regarding claims that the UAE-backed club intentionally misled financial regulators could result in Pep Guardiola's side being prevented from competing in Europe's premier club competition for the 2019/20 season. The implications are that either Manchester City's good faith in the CFCB IC is misplaced or the CFCB IC process is being misrepresented by individuals intent on damaging the Club's reputation and its commercial interests.

The latest online version of the New York Times article does not contain any reference to "people familiar with the case".

Manchester City would still have the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and a lengthy legal process is likely, while the club have continually denied any wrongdoing throughout.

If he does, it is understood that Leterme will refer City to Uefa's "adjudicatory chamber" for a full consideration of the facts and a potentially strong sanction, because the investigatory chambers disciplinary powers are limited to a warning, reprimand or fine up to a maximum €100,000.

Manchester City have not commented on the video.

The person also said the Premier League champions have not been cooperating with the investigation when they have been asked about information in leaked documents.
