United States health officials confirm two HIV cases linked to 'Vampire' facials

Vampire facial

This comes after an inspections report on September 7, in which officials revealed that the service could have put people at risk of these infections, especially if they got the treatment in May or June of 2018.

The VIP Spa was closed after health officials determined that treatments offered there could potentially spread blood-borne infections, such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C to clients.

Their treatments took place at the VIP Spa in Albuquerque between May and September of past year.

A vampire facial, also known as a plasma-rich protein facial, involves injecting nutrient-rich plasma into the skin on your face using a tool called a micro-needling pen.

Two people have contracted the HIV virus after having vampire facials at a health spa which used dirty needles to perform the procedure, health officials say.

The NMDOH is strongly encouraging people who received injection-related procedures at the VIP Spa in Tijeras Avenue to take advantage of free HIV testing.

You might be wondering how an unsuspecting person getting a facial at a spa could end up with a blood-borne infection like HIV.

The procedure is touted as being able to rejuvenate the skin by boosting the turnover of skin cells, but its benefits remain disputed.

Both of the customers recently contracted the same strain of HIV and both received injection procedures at the spa between last May and September, however, it is not clear whether their contraction of the virus was caused by the treatment.

"Testing is important for everyone as there are effective treatments for HIV and many hepatitis infections", said Kathy Kunzel, the department's Cabinet Secretary.

Since then, Kardashian has abandoned the practise, saying that it's too painful but the popularity for the facials continues to rise.

The beauty treatment became a trend in 2013 after Kim Kardashian posted a graphic Instagram photo of herself directly after the procedure. "PRP can be combined with microneedling to improve large pores, acne scars, and fine lines", Debra Jaliman, MD, another New York City-based dermatologist, previously told Health.

In its public notice, the health department advised anyone interested in receiving a cosmetic service that involves needle injections to verify the procedure will be delivered by a licensed medical provider.
