Trump Says Beijing Broke Trade Deal During US-China Talks

Trump Exaggerates Tariff Revenue

Earlier in the day, President Donald Trump insisted a deal was still possible to reach this week, even as he reiterated plans to raise tariffs on Chinese goods. Then, after briefing Trump on the negotiations, top US trade negotiator Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had a working dinner with the leader of the Chinese delegation, Vice Premier Liu He.

Later Trump said the US-China trade talks were "candid and constructive", but no deal was reached as new tariffs kicked in. China wants them lifted; the USA wants to keep tariffs as leverage to pressure the Chinese to comply with any agreement. "I think it's the American president's fault".

The increased tariffs will take effect just after midnight on Friday, the Trump administration confirmed earlier this week.

"I am different than a lot of people".

Trump has railed since his days on the campaign trail about the U.S. hemorrhaging money on global trade agreements. They had been meant to wrap up the months-long negotiations and come to a final deal, which would then be presented to US President Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for signing. That likely kept Thursday's declines in check, said John Stoltzfus, chief investment strategist at Oppenheimer Asset Management. There has also been talk of the US putting a tariff on imported automobiles, which would damage Europe's exports to the United States.

The negative tone that has gripped markets this week was triggered Sunday by a Twitter threat from Mr. Trump to go ahead with plans to impose more tariffs on Chinese goods this Friday.

"Mentally and materially, China is much better prepared than its US counterpart", the newspaper said.

The U.S. collected about $23 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods in calendar year 2018 - far more than any other country, according to the U.S.

US and Chinese negotiators met Thursday just hours before the United States was set to raise tariffs on Chinese imports in a dramatic escalation of tensions between the world's two biggest economies.

Figures show the USA trade deficit - the difference between U.S. exports and imports - hitting a record $621bn in 2018, with China accounting for $419.2bn of that.

Following earlier widespread losses in Asia, Europe's main markets were all in the red.

That it is suddenly expanding again at a rate in line with the previous post-war average is partly attributable to policies ranging from a new regulatory approach to tax reform.

"They didn't realize when they pulled their concessions off the table that the administration would have the reaction that it did", he told AFP.

The questions we have, however, center on where the president is leading us on trade and what impact that could have on the economic engine.

"It is hoped that the United States and the Chinese sides will work together.to resolve existing problems through co-operation and consultation", it said in a statement.

"But what China is willing to acknowledge in public is less than it is willing to acknowledge in private".

The sudden rupture has roiled global stock markets this week and unnerved exporters caught off guard after negotiators on both sides had previously touted progress in the negotiations.

Kennedy warned that the "possibilities for miscalculation on both sides is pretty high".

Tariffs on those Chinese goods will more than double to 25% at 04:01 GMT, and Beijing has vowed to retaliate.

"If the tariffs go up to 25 percent, costs will go up".

"The whole industry is like this, customers are waiting and watching, suspending orders, holding off on new orders, and suspending shipments", she said. "I don't know what will happen", said Emily Wang of Hainan Zhongyi Frozen Food, which exports tilapia.

Neither side has provided details of specific issues involved, although the clashes are thought to include differences over intellectual property theft and requiring United States companies operating in China to share technology with Chinese counterparts. "China sets great store on trustworthiness and keeps its promises, and this has never changed".

The US stock market just wants to see signs of nearing a deal, Alden added, emphasising that investors may not be concerned with the fine print.

But each side believes it is better positioned than the other to survive the dispute, Kennedy said.

How does the United States see it?
