Samsung Galaxy Fold to get new launch date after ‘foldgate’ controversy

Of Course Google Is Developing A Foldable

The units given to global tech reviewers encountered display distortion and screen flickering issues, forcing the South Korean giant to postpone its launch in Hong Kong and Shanghai on April 23 and 24 respectively, and issue a recall of review units.

Earlier this week Samsung emailed U.S. pre-order customers telling them their orders would be cancelled if they didn't tell the company they wanted to remain on the list.

Samsung will reportedly reveal its refreshed plan for the troubled Galaxy Fold's United States launch soon.

On the other hand, Huawei's folding Mate X smartphone-tablet hybrid is expected to launch in June.

The foldable smartphone isn't easy to buy as the base price of this type of devices comes at a minimum $2000 right now.

Though the issue does not hurt Samsung's balance sheet, the postponement damages the firm's efforts to portray itself as an innovative first-mover, analysts have said.

It closed Galaxy Fold pre-orders earlier due to what it said was "high demand". Still, it's definitely not a good look for the company after it announced (and then changed) its initial shipping date.

As per the Korea Herald, Koh said that the company "has reviewed the defect caused from substances [entering the device] and we will reach a conclusion [about the launch] today or tomorrow".

That was before several tech journalists began having issues with the displays on Samsung's new foldable device. Whatever the original launch date was, it's safe to assume it has now been pushed back. Koh didn't provide any insight into when the smartphone might launch, according to the report, but we'll at least have a sense of Samsung's plan within the next 24 hours.

A spokesperson for Samsung told the Sun that, in some cases, the screen malfunctions had been caused by 'impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the [device's] hinge'.
