Eat well, exercise more: New global guidelines to reduce risk of dementia

Dementia is a syndrome - usually of a chronic or progressive nature - in which there is deterioration in cognitive function (i.e. the ability to process thought) beyond what might be expected from normal ageing. This disease is also becoming a major reason for dependency and disability among older people.

It also affects thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language and judgement and results from a variety of diseases and injuries that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer's or stroke. "The scientific evidence gathered for these guidelines confirms what we have suspected for some time, that what is good for our heart, is also good for our brain". He highlighted the condition as a global health priority.

The organisation estimated that the cost of caring for people with dementia would rise to two trillion dollars annually by 2030, if adequate measures were not taken by countries to address the problem.

The agency said its new recommendations could provide the key to delaying or slowing cognitive decline or dementia.

"While some people are unlucky and inherit a combination of genes that makes it highly likely they will develop dementia, many people have the opportunity to substantially reduce their risk by living a healthy lifestyle", Tara Spires-Jones, a professor at the University of Edinburgh and program leader at the UK Dementia Research Institute, told the Science Media Center Tuesday.

Since the disease is not curable and so many experimental treatments have proved to be ineffective, targeting risk factors for the condition and focusing on prevention may be more beneficial in the shorter term, she adds.

"Other recommendations have a less strong evidence base but may have evidence that they do not increase risk or harm and can therefore be recommended safely, although their impact on risk is less certain". "We need to do everything we can to reduce our risk of dementia".

"People should be looking for these nutrients through food. not through supplements", Carrillo agreed.

The WHO strongly recommends that countries manage the growing health challenge of dementia by creating national policies and plans, an essential element of which is support for carers of people with dementia. "Several systematic reviews of observational studies have concluded that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with decreased risk of mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's Disease, but modest adherence is not", the report states.

The report, which is close to 100 pages, identifies various lifestyle adjustments that can be made in an effort to reduce the risk of dementia.
