NYC Jewish schools closed over failure to heed orders on measles outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week that there have been more cases of measles reported this year than in the past 25 years

The latest figure underscores the rapid rise of this highly contagious disease, which is at the highest it has been in any single year since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000. Some of them triggered USA outbreaks, mostly among unvaccinated people.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, measles spreads more easily than nearly any other infectious disease, carried by droplets from coughs, sneezes or even speech.

Measles can live for up to two hours in the airspace where an infected person breathed, coughed or sneezed. "Cough, pink eye, runny nose, maybe a low-grade fever, a fever of 101", said Revolt.

Vaccine is the best way to prevent measles. That recommendation, in conjunction with redoubled efforts to vaccinate lower-income communities, worked.

Dr. Jonathan Temte, a professor of family medicine community health at UW and chair of the Wisconsin Council on Immunization, said it is only a matter of time before Wisconsin could see a case.

Vaccinations are required for children who attend public school, but waivers are provided for parents who object on religious grounds, "and I don't believe there is any standard of proof for that", Giorgio said. 44 cases so far this year were directly imported from other countries. When people from these areas visit the USA, the disease can take hold in places where vaccination rates are low.

(CDC) reported 704 cases of the measles nationwide, with some in states like Iowa and MI, as of April 26.

The order Tuesday comes as measles has sickened more than 700 people in 22 states this year, including one person in Indiana.

Globally, 169 million children did not receive the first dose of the measles vaccine over the same seven-year period. Health officials say it is particularly unsafe for infants who can not be immunized until they are at least 12 months old, and for young children who have only received one dose of measles vaccine.

Those over 50 are considered immune as the disease was widespread in childhood, according to the ARPHS. The last similar instance occurred during a bad outbreak in Philadelphia in the early 1990s, when the city recorded more than 900 cases, majority members of two fundamentalist church groups that did not accept vaccination or other kinds of modern medical care. Whereas getting a second dose of the vaccine is typically about half that price. "These kinds of laws helped drive the immunization effort", says Colgrove.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine - or MMR vaccine is safe and 97% effective at preventing measles after the second dose. "The recent outbreak started through what we call importation", she said. "If things don't change, we could be back in a United States where measles is not eliminated", says Najera.

"Vaccination is the only way to end this outbreak".

The Health Department had already shuttered five schools for failing to maintain vaccination and attendance records, but later gave them permission to reopen. We've seen it in Brooklyn, a bit in California and Washington state.
