NFL's Tyrann Mathieu proposes to girlfriend with $250K engagement ring

Houston Texans free safety Tyrann Mathieu celebrates strong safety Justin Reids interception and touchdown during the first half of an NFL football game against the Washington Redskins in Landover Md

It's been reported that Tyrann Mathieu has reportedly been targeted in an extortion plot by one of his distant relatives, while the New Orleans man in question was recently arrested and released on $25,000 bond.

In the same string of texts, Sears later allegedly sent an attached voice memo saying, "I want $1.5 million by Friday or I'm going to kill you all", court records say.

While the victim is unnamed in the criminal complaint - only referred to as a professional athlete with the initials "TM" - Mathieu's lawyer, Denise White of EAG Sports, confirmed to Kansas City ABC affiliate KMBC that Mathieu was the victim.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation authorities had been focused in on Sears since April, when he first made demands to Mathieu claiming he needed, "$1.5 million deposited into his account". Mathieu blocked Sears' number.

Mathieu's representatives told WDSU that the accused extortionist has mental health struggles. Sears will be back in court on June 21st and if he's convicted, he could face up to 20 years in jail. He is being held on home incarceration and with a monitoring device, according to the court order.

Mathieu kicked off his National Football League career in 2013, when he was selected in the third round by the Arizona Cardinals. He made the All-Rookie team in 2013 and was a first-team All Pro in 2015. Mathieu signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the Chiefs this offseason.

He has played for the Arizona Cardinals and the Houston Texans.
