Nepal mountaineer climbs Mount Everest for record 23rd time

There are 378 climbers permitted to scale Everest this year alongside sherpas like Kami Rita

In addition to his almost two dozen summits of Everest, Rita has scaled several other peaks that are among the world's highest, including K-2, Cho-Oyu, Manaslu and Lhotse.

The climbing season ends in May and hundreds of climbers are now on Everest, trying to reach the top from both the Nepali and Tibetan sides of the mountain.

The world record holder climber had admitted that although climbing was a tough task, it was a regular affair for him.

A Nepalese Sherpa climber on Wednesday reached atop Mount Everest for the 23rd time, becoming the only Mountaineer in the world to hold the record for most summits on the world's highest mountain.

Acharya said dozens of climbers are trailing Sherpa with the aim of reaching the summit Wednesday.

A guide for more than two decades, he first summited the 8,848-metre (29,029-foot) peak in 1994 when working for a commercial expedition.

Mr Poudel said that many teams were preparing to summit in the next few days.

"It would be impossible for many foreign climbers to summit mountains without the help of a Sherpa", said Ang Tshering Sherpa, former president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

"I am still strong and want to climb Sagarmatha 25 times", Kami had told Reuters before leaving for the mountain in March referring to the Nepali name for Everest.

According to reports, an additional 140 members are planning for Mt Everest trek via the northern route from Tibet.

Sherpa took advantage of the first weather window of this season on the mountain. The mountain also claimed the lives of five climbers, including an experienced Sherpa guide who was knocked down a crevasse by a rescue helicopter.

Mountaineering has become a lucrative business since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first ascent of Everest in 1953.

Nepalese veteran Sherpa guide, Kami Rita, 48, waves as he arrives in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Tourism, which includes mountain climbing, is the main source of income for cash-strapped Nepal, home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountains.
