Move over 48MP cameras, Samsung brings new image sensor with 64MP resolution

Samsung Announces New 64MP ISOCELL Camera Sensor for Smartphones

This year we got to see the launch of Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro which also comes with a similar 48MP camera sensor, and the Sony IMX586 sensor powers this. Both sensors are expected to go into mass production later in the second half of 2019, and that perhaps means it will be ready for use in the Galaxy Note 10, and other flagship devices billed for release at about that time.

With the 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 and the 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM1, Samsung expands its 0.8μm image sensor lineup. Samsung unveiled two new 0.8-micrometer pixel image sensors - the 64-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GW1 and the 48-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GM2, expanding its 0.8-micrometer pixel image sensor lineup, the smallest pixel size now available in the market. That's partly due to the excellent imaging sensors Samsung uses in their devices.

Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 is a 0.8-micrometer (?m) pixel 64-megapixel (Mp) sensor. Their existing top-of-the-line camera sensor is at 20 megapixels. It supports real-time high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 100-decibels (dB) to offer richer hues.

Samsung has also updated 48Mp ISOCELL Bright GM2 which has now embraced the Tetracell technology for better low-light photos and remosaic algorithm in brighter environment. The dynamic range of a conventional image sensor is around 60dB while that of the human eye is typically around 120dB.

The 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM2 also features the same Tetracell technology and remosaic algorithm as the GW1.

"GW1 is equipped with a Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) that converts the received light into an electric signal according to the illumination of the environment". The sensor will also make use of the 4-in-1 pixel binning technology alongwith high-performance phase detection autofocus technology, and it will be able to record slow motion videos at 480fps in 1080p.
