Missouri lawmakers approve bill to ban abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy

The Act passed the state legislature Wednesday after overcoming attempts to dilute it with rape and incest exceptions, and Republican Gov. Kay Ivey signed it into law later that day, declaring it "stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians' deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God". The rule keeps abortion care out of reach for many low-income and marginalized women who rely on Medicaid and the Indian Health Service for their healthcare.

"Alabama's law won't stop abortion, but it will kill women", Democratic California Rep. Harley Rouda wrote on Twitter.

Missouri's Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted Friday to ban abortions eight weeks into pregnancy, even in cases of rape, incest or human trafficking. And they are hoping the Supreme Court will back their radical play.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat who's running for president, speaks at a campaign town hall at George Mason University on May 16, in Fairfax, Virginia.

Ms Warren said Congress should require all health care insurance cover abortions.

Warren wrote that Congress should also pass laws preemptively blocking Targeted Regulations on Abortion Providers, also known as TRAP laws, which impose restrictions on abortion clinics to make it impossible to deliver care, and should repeal the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal funds from being used for abortion services. "These are ways that women around the world who don't have access to legal abortions perform their own".

California Senator Kamala Harris, another Democratic 2020 hopeful, said people needed to fight back to protect Roe vs Wade as it is under attack.

The controversial Alabama decision is being called the most extreme abortion law in America, but it's not enforced yet - there's still six months before it comes into effect. Let's be absolutely clear: "women will die and doctors could spend up to 99 years in prison with Alabama's new law", Porter added. They intend to argue that a state cannot restrict access to abortion before viability - the point at which a fetus can survive outside the uterus - which is a right that federal courts have repeatedly reaffirmed in decisions since Roe.

"These kinds of restrictions are medically-unnecessary and exist for only one objective: to functionally eliminate the ability of women to access abortion services", Warren wrote. The bill has been sent to the governor for signing.

A number of 2020 candidates have spoken out against Alabama and other state's assault on abortion rights, but Warren was the first to respond with a plan.
