Madonna, on Eurovision, says she won't bow 'to suit someone's political agenda'

Dana International interval act of the first Semi Final of Eurovision 2019

After the 41-country competition kicked off on Tuesday with a first semi-final, Kan's webcast cut to animated satellite footage showing explosions in Tel Aviv set to a menacing soundtrack.

For those who didn't wake up at the crack of dawn to see KMH do her thing, she wowed the crowd with a gravity-defying performance of her aptly titled Eurovision song "Zero Gravity" and impressed both the professional juries and the TV audience enough to fly her way into the grand final.

Madonna landed in Tel Aviv Tuesday night, defying calls by pro-Palestinian activists for her to boycott the worldwide song competition hosted by Israel.

"We know that at a certain stage there was an attempt, apparently by Hamas, to commandeer our digital broadcast", chief executive, Eldad Koblenz, told Israel's Army Radio.

The Palestinian political and militant faction Hamas, which has fought three wars with Israel since taking power in the Gaza Strip in 2007, did not comment about the incident.

"But I am happy to say that within a few minutes we managed to assume control over this phenomenon".

At least 25 Palestinians and four Israelis were killed before a ceasefire agreement was signed between Gaza and Israel.

Israel's hosting of this year's version of the popular European music competition has drawn pro-Palestinian boycott calls to protest against the country's policies.

Palestinians and their foreign supporters have called on, so far fruitlessly, countries to shun the Tel Aviv songfest as part of wider efforts to isolate Israel internationally.

Last year's victor was Israeli entrant Netta Barzilai with the song "Toy", which went on to top the Billboard dance club chart in the U.S. in August, a first for an Israeli singer. The second semi-final is on Thursday.

The insider added that the Material Girl would bring a massive entourage of 160 people and the bill to bring her and her team to Tel Aviv comes in at a staggering $1m (£775,000).

"I'll never stop playing music to suit someone's political agenda nor will I stop speaking out against violations of human rights wherever in the world they may be", Madonna said in a statement to Reuters in response to criticism.

The Palestinian-led BDS movement described it as it "crude propaganda straight out of apartheid South Africa's playbook".

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign said on Tuesday that hundreds of artists have signed a petition against Eurovision 2019, which is being held in Israel, Felesteen.ps has reported.
