Israel reopens border crossings with Gaza

Palestinian amputees break their fast at a community center that was destroyed during the two-day escalation in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on May 8

Israeli authorities informed the Palestinian side that it made a decision to reopen the crossings of Kerem Shalom in southern Gaza Strip and Erez in the north, said Raed Fatouh, chief of goods coordination between the Gaza Strip and Israel, in a press statement.

Since March 30 a year ago, the Palestinians in Gaza have been holding weekly rallies to demand the right to return for those driven out of their homeland by Israeli aggression and an end to the Israeli siege on the enclave.

The developments came after a week that saw violent clashes along the Israel-Gaza border which remained closed for the Memorial Day and Independence Day holidays from May 7 to 9, The Times of Israel reported.

At least one Palestinian demonstrator was killed and 30 others wounded on Friday during their clashes with Israeli soldiers stationed on the border between the eastern Gaza Strip and Israel.

On Friday, Israel extended the fishing zone to 12 nautical miles, after a ban for six days.

The truce agreement was announced by Palestinian factions early on Monday. The protests have often devolved into cycles of cross-border conflicts quickly defused with short-lived truces mediated by Egypt and the United Nations.

The protesters are demanding an end to an Israeli-Egyptian blockade on Gaza and Palestinians' rights to lands from which their families fled or were forced to flee during Israel's founding in 1948.

The Palestinians have dismissed U.S. efforts since President Donald Trump decided in 2017 to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and declare Jerusalem Israel's capital.

The UN has said that the territory will become unlivable by 2020.
