IN residents now can obtain measles vaccine without Rx

Doctors urged to talk to parents about importance of vaccines

The current outbreak has been concentrated in New York City, where officials said more than 390 cases have been recorded since October, mostly among children in Orthodox Jewish communities in Brooklyn.

The national outbreak has escalated since 82 people in 2018 and more than 40 people in 2019 brought measles to the United States from other countries, most frequently Ukraine, Israel and the Philippines.

As of Monday, there have been 423 measles infections in New York City, mostly in orthodox Jewish areas, and 202 in Rockland. Over one-third of the confirmed measles infections are in children under five years of age. The CDC today spelled out all the details and implications of this year's surge in cases in an early report in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) and in its weekly case update.

"You don't need a booster after you've had your two doses of MMR", says Jennifer Heath, a supervisor within the Minnesota Department of Health's Vaccine and Preventable Disease.

She said the easiest way to prevent measles is to vaccinate. "He is only 5 months old and didn't even have a chance to get vaccinated".

Anyone born before 1957 is considered protected because they likely had measles or were exposed to measles.

The number was up 1.3 per cent since the most recent tally of 695 reported on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Additionally, officials confirmed that measles in Florida is rare - due to generally high vaccination rates - and that both confirmed cases had recently traveled internationally to Southeast Asia. Children under that age and people who are unable to get vaccines for medical reasons (eg they are allergic to the vaccine or have a weakened immune system) rely on herd immunity to not get sick.

"Measles can be extremely serious, so make sure you and your family are protected". It was a much smaller community than New York City or Los Angeles and was tamed by an intense investigation and vaccination campaign that involved 230 health workers tracking down infected people and those they had contact with, at a cost of about $865 000.

Between 1968 and 1989, some people might have only received one MMR dose.

Which vaccine did I get? "A single dose of measles vaccine protects about 95 percent of children, but after two doses, nearly 100 percent are immune", Michigan's health department said in a press release.

IN residents choosing to seek a vaccine using this order should inform the pharmacist they will be using the state health commissioner's standing order. "Some of those people who are not vaccinated, it's because they can't be". Two doses are needed, spaced 28 days or more apart.

If you're unsure whether you've been vaccinated, or whether you need to be vaccinated, said Langley, there's no harm in getting another dose of the vaccine.

None of this is particularly surprising if you've been following the festering growth of the anti-vaccination movement across the country.

The CDC says after getting an MMR shot, it takes anywhere from two to three weeks for the vaccine to work. The CDC typically advises that the first dose of the vaccine be administered at 12 months, making young infants especially susceptible. A 93% to 95% immunization rate is needed within a community to prevent measles from spreading among the population, according to the World Health Organization.
