Helicopter Crashes In Hudson River: Misses Landing Pad & Tumbles Into Water

[Update] Helicopter Crashes Into Hudson River Near Midtown

The helicopter, which took a rough tumble into the water, fell short of a nearby landing pad and ended up submerged on Wednesday afternoon, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Dramatic video footage of the incident shot by witnesses and posted on social media showed the helicopter spinning seemingly out of control over the Hudson near 30th Street, before plummeting into the water.

In 32 years, NY Waterway crews have rescued nearly 300 people from the waters of the Hudson River, including 143 people who were rescued from U.S. Airways Flight 1549, dubbed the "Miracle on the Hudson", in the most successful marine rescue in aviation history. The chopper then crashed into the water just next to the pier and the pilot climbed onto the emergency flotation pontoons, which has deployed, police said.

"It was just instinct", Sciaino said. Several NYPD and FDNY boats were alongside the helicopter. The FDNY later amended their report to say that there were two "non-life threatening" injuries at the scene. The helicopter appears to level out and water sprays as the craft goes down.

The NTSB said it will also be investigating the accident but would not send a team to the scene.

A helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York City on Wednesday shortly after taking off from Manhattan, causing minor injuries to the pilot and a dockworker, police and fire officials said.

Officials said southband lanes of traffic have reopened on 12th Avenue between 42nd and 23rd Streets.
