Google unveils Nest Hub Max smart display with focus on privacy

Google announces Nest Hub Max consolidates smart home gadgets under the Nest brand

"Nest Hub Max is specifically designed for those shared places in the home where your family and friends gather", says Rishi Chandra, Vice President of Product and General Manager, Google Home and Nest. YouTube and Hulu can be watched from it. To that end, Google built in several privacy measures into the hardware.

So what's changed? The materials are a little cheaper, the screen resolutions are a little lower, the internal storage has been chopped down, and you don't get quite as fast a processor as you do on the flagships. After all, the Google Home Hub is now just $99 - a fair bit cheaper than the $299 asking price of the Hub Max. We'd say the mid-range Pixels are looking like great value for money. That newfound closeness is coming at a cost, though: Nest accounts are migrating to Google accounts, and the company is retiring the Works with Nest API, consequently breaking direct IFTTT integration with Nest products.

There are no plans to rebrand existing products (Google Home, Home Mini, Home Max, Home Hub, NestCam IQ, Nest Aware etc) but as they are superseded, the replacements will have the new Google Nest branding.

As you'd expect, Google Assistant is included, as is full Chromecast support, alongside WiFi and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, there isn't a built-in slider to physically cover the camera. Of course you get all the benefits of Google Assistant as well. What's unique with the Nest Hub Max is that it has a unique feature called Auto Framing that essentially follows your face as you move around a room, automatically centering it. The smart display goes on sale soon for £219.

Also arriving with Android Q (and rolling back to Android 9 Pie users as well) is Focus Mode.

The camera has an extra function too - it can be used to trigger hand gestures - ideal if you're using the device in the kitchen with your hands covered in self-raising flour.

Security and privacy features are getting shifted around and made easier to use, and upgrades for parental controls are in the pipeline too - like the option to give your kids "bonus time" when they've earned it. The former is a brand through which Google sells smart speakers and displays, whereas the latter is home to some of the most popular connected cameras and thermostats. The beta program has been extended to more devices, too.

With the announcement, Google has also lowered the prices of some of the current Home hardware.

For a Google user this makes flawless sense, meaning that it should be simpler and more seamless to manage your devices moving forwards.

The camera also supports video calling with Google Duo, so you can make and receive calls using Google's video chat app from a bunch of different devices, including iOS mobile devices and any PC that has a Chrome browser.
