Google severed Huawei's access to key Android apps and services

Huawei's future phones reportedly won't have access to Google services, including the Play Store

The move was widely understood as a ban on Huawei products, and now we're starting to see the fallout.

Losing access to Google's products would be a big blow for Huawei, which has passed Apple to become the world's second largest maker of smartphones.

The US government had previously banned ZTE Corp although that ban was lifted once a case involving allegations of trade law breaches was resolved. While Google has yet to make an official announcement, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is likely to lose access to Android operating system updates, while its forthcoming smartphones will be shut out of most Google apps and services. Future Huawei smartphones and devices will not be able to provide the Google Play Store or Google's core smartphone apps like Gmail, Maps, and Calendar.

The move doesn't appear to have come as a surprise to Huawei, who has been working on developing its own software and technology in case the U.S. succeeded in chasing off potential business partnerships. Huawei has made a few attempts to break into the United States market, but pressure from Congress on Huawei's individual business partners, like AT&T and Verizon, have caused them to walk away from deals with the company.

In addition to enacting bans on American companies, the US has pressured other countries - both allies and foes - to avoid using Huawei to roll-out their 5G networks. As per an earlier report, the European Union is also considering proposals that would effectively amount to a de-facto ban on Huawei equipment for 5G mobile networks.

That will severely curtail the sale of Huawei smartphones overseas, though it's unclear when those apps - which are popular mainly outside of China - will become unavailable. The Herald has asked Huawei and Google for comment.

The big question now is where the liability lies when Google pumps out an upgrade to their latest OS and the owners of Chinese made smartphones from brands such as Huawei and Oppo can not access the software or Android functions such as Maps or GMail become inoperable. This also means access to the Google Play Store will be removed. "It is expected that Huawei's growth may slow, but only slightly".

In Huawei's home nation of China, not much will change. Google has already been reported to stop licensing its proprietary Google Play components for future Huawei phones. "In China, they're probably OK, where I don't think there is the same demand - there are alternatives as far as app stores Chinese consumers are not reliant on Google's services", he added.
