Florida prepares for influx of immigrants from Mexico border

Trump Administration to Ship Migrants to Broward and Palm Beach Counties UPDATED

The development came after Broward and Palm Beach county officials said they were notified by U.S. Border Patrol that more than a 100 immigrants would be sent weekly to each of the counties starting in the next two weeks. But it's too late to avoid a controversy that had Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis - one of Trump's most visible allies - criticizing the idea as out of step with actions taken in the state by the president's own party. "Florida counties do not have the resources to accommodate an influx of illegal immigrants", the aide said.

"I think it will tax our resources, the schools, the health care, law enforcement, state agencies", DeSantis said. I want to thank the community for its support. "We're not going to be like some of those other states that are not allowing federal authorities to come into a jail or courthouse, we've been very cooperative".

The clarity from federal immigration authorities should - at least temporary - quell a tempest that erupted Thursday after the chief of CBP's Miami office began informing sheriffs in Palm Beach and Martin counties that flights of undocumented immigrants could begin landing in Palm Beach International Airport in the near future.

Bradshaw told Rubio that U.S. Customs and Border Protection will begin transporting 500 migrants a month from the border to Broward and Palm Beach counties and release them pending asylum hearings, the senator's tweet said.

US President Donald Trump waves as he steps off Air Force One as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (2L) and his wife Casey DeSantis look on at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida on May 8, 2019, as he arrives and tours areas impacted by Hurricane Michael and later holds a Make America Great Again rally. That left state leaders scrambling for information. "Although our commission has not had the chance to address this issue, in my opinion, the people that we can't find shelter for and will become homeless, I would suggest, that we bring them to the Trump hotels and ask the president to open his heart and home as well". You know, they watch the border for this kind of thing. "This is a direct result of bad policy implemented and I think they should change the policy".

A US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official denied the reports, telling AFP: "We are not transporting any family units to Florida at this time".

The announcement from CBP comes after local officials in Florida sounded the alarms, insisting their communities are not prepared to manage migrant families.

"The men and women of CBP are doing everything we can to achieve our humanitarian mission and will continue to coordinate with stakeholders in local communities, including other law enforcement agencies, elected officials, and non-governmental organizations, as DHS employs a "whole of government" approach to confronting the ongoing crisis".

The sheriff said the migrants could start coming to Palm Beach County in just two weeks.

"If you believe what was leaked and reported, the plan would be to simply put migrants out on the street", DeSantis said. By Thursday afternoon, politicians in Broward and Palm Beach counties were talking about a flood of as many as 1,000 immigrants each month and warning of a looming homelessness crisis.

"We will pretty much double or triple our homeless population", said Mayor Mack Bernard. That is equivalent to about 1,000 people per month, divided between the two counties.

"We are putting together the resources, the support groups that helped immigrants for a long time", Gimenez said.

"These people are human beings".

"We're going to work with them to help them remove criminal aliens".

The move by the federal government, which is trying to alleviate problems at the U.S. -Mexico border, was quickly called "political playback" by Democratic officials.

U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, a Democrat whose district includes parts of both counties, said Thursday "there's a stunning amount of confusion surrounding the administration's outrageous immigration policy, even more today than usual".

DeSantis made it clear that no migrants have been released in Florida and doesn't agree with the plan.

You know, for a little background here, there's been this surge of migrants since the beginning of the year at the border, and that's overwhelmed the government's ability to process them.
