Farmer cuts off own leg after getting trapped in machinery

Nebraska farmer cut off his leg with a pocket knife after getting stuck in a grain hopper

Mr Kaser was unloading corn when he accidentally stepped on the opening of his grain auger and his leg was sucked inside. About 8 inches below his knee, he found the smallest connection of tissue and determined it was his best chance to free himself.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he spent weeks undergoing rehabilitation before returning home on May 10.

Kaser plans to get back to farming after his leg heals. "I didn't know what to do", he told reporters on Tuesday.

He realised that his only option was to "cut it off" using the small knife in his pocket.

"I felt it try to grab me again", he said.

Kaser, 63, was working alone on his corn, soybean and hog farm on April 19 when the accident happened, he told ABC News.

"When I was cutting it, the nerve endings, I could feel, like, the ping every time I sawed around that pipe, and all at once it went and it let me go and I got the heck out of there", he told KETV.

With no phone to call for help and the knowledge no one would come to his aid, he made the agonising decision to amputate his leg.

Although most people would be devastated at losing the bottom half of their leg, Kaser is staying positive, saying: 'I guess I'm stubborn. "I said, 'The only way I'm getting out of here is to cut it off.' So I just started sawing on it", he said, according to WTVD.

Kaser then crawled about 150 feet to the nearest phone in order to call for help.

"I never lost consciousness until they put me out in Lincoln when they started operating on me".

"I was in a hurry and didn't pay attention", he said, hoping his story can serve as a warning to other farmers.

"It is what it is", Kaser said.

The farmer told CNN that this isn't the first time he's had a scare like this on the farm. He said he is now waiting to be fitted with a prosthetic limb. Some (other patients) won't ever get out of their wheelchairs.
