Dyson offers a first glimpse of its electric auto plans

Dyson Malmesbury vacuum testing

The British engineering firm - traditionally known for its powerful vacuum cleaners - is quick to stress that the designs are not reflective of what the production auto will look like, although the large layout, high ride height and large allow wheels point towards the model being a big SUV, such is the trend of other manufacturers launching their first EVs.

A patent published this week by electrical appliance mainstay Dyson shows a vehicle with a long-wheel base and reclining seats that has some suggesting the vacuum-maker is planning an off-road EV.

The patent images were filed 18 months ago but have only now been released by Dyson and attached to a letter to employees, as reported by iNews. In other words, a Tesla Model X rival.

James Dyson, the company's founder, told staff via an email the patents "don't reveal what our vehicle will really look like or give any specifics around what it will do", but do "provide a glimpse of some of the inventive steps" for the new vehicle.

The patents show a vehicle with very large wheels, giving a low rolling resistance and high ground clearance. The driver would be seated lower in the cabin, with a shallow-angled windscreen improving the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

"The vehicle will include fundamentally new technologies and make some inventive leaps", he said, suggesting that the auto will "differ from the status quo" by not using "electric propulsion systems".

Advances will come in the aerodynamics, efficiency and vehicle architecture - how the auto is laid out - Sir James said.

Testing for the vehicles is expected to take place at its campus at Hullavington Airfield in Wiltshire, where the firm is investing £200 million in new facilities.

Previously, Dyson said that it is looking to "more than double" the headcount of its Research, Design and Development (RDD) teams in Singapore.
