Deontay Wilder knocks Dominic Breazeale in first round to retain WBC title

Fury Coach: Wilder Seems Psychologically Damaged After Tyson Fight

Wilder didn't kill Breazeale, but he did knock him out in the first round of their fight.

Breazeale tried to beat the count as Wilder celebrated on a turnbuckle, but referee Harvey Dock waved it off at the 2:17 mark of the opening round.

Wilder, who won the bronze medal for the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games, moved up the all-time heavyweight defence list and joined four iconic champions who also made nine straight defences: Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis.

It was a 40th victory by knockout for Wilder and just a second career loss for Breazeale, following his 2016 defeat by Anthony Joshua.

The history of the Heavyweight division in boxing is long and storied, but for the past few decades, the division has slipped in notoriety, making way for the lower weight classes to grab all the headlines. "I would just like to say well done to Wilder in knocking out Breazeale". Later that night, there was a confrontation between the fighters and their teams at the fight hotel, and Breazeale alleged that Wilder's younger brother, Marsellos, had punched him in the head from behind. "There was a big buildup to this fight", he said. The great thing is all these fights rare in discussion.

With the win over Breazeale, Wilder raised his record to 41 victories and one controversial draw.

But he was nothing but respectful after the fight, saying: "Everything came out of me tonight".

"Whether they happen next, or two fights down the line, all those fights are going to happen in the near future". The Bronze Bomber not only made a big statement in the Big Apple this weekend, he also set the pace as Joshua and Fury get ready to handle their business. I just want you to have patience.

"We've tried many times to make the best fights happen".

When pressed by Showtime's Jim Gray-who correctly pointed out the tepid interest fans have for fights like Wilder-Breazeale and Joshua-Ruiz-Wilder could only smile.

"It will happen. I believe in all my heart it will happen".

Wilder, who drew with Tyson Fury a year ago, said before the fight with fellow American Breazeale that he still wanted a "body on his record". "When you get dropped on the canvas like that I understand you have to get yourself back together".
