Clear weather for Wednesday night launch, viewing of Falcon 9 Heavy

On May 15 SpaceX is launching 60 Starlink internet satellites from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida

A Falcon 9 rocket was scheduled to launch the first 60 of SpaceX's Starlink satellites tonight (May 15) from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, but Mother Nature didn't cooperate: Strong high-altitude winds forced the company to push the attempt by 24 hours.

The project, named Starlink, a multi-stage operation meant to launch satellites into space that can provide the world with high-speed internet. The project is expected to be completed by 2027 and will consist which is almost 12,000 satellites - six times the number of all operational spacecraft now in orbit.

Satellite operators sometimes draw a distinction between usable capacity and aggregate capacity when discussing low-Earth-orbit constellations, since the constellations are generally designed for global coverage, but are unlikely to have customers in every location where beams are active. The final Starlink constellation is planned to have around 12,000 satellites total. The company launched two prototype spacecraft nicknamed Tintin A and Tintin B in February 2018.

Musk provided a photo of the satellites packed inside the nose cone of the rocket awaiting launch.

Elon Musk's SpaceX has made a business out of launching satellites for commercial customers, NASA and the US military. "At this point, it looks like we have sufficient capital to get to an operational level, but, of course, if things go wrong and there are unexpected issues, we will need to raise more capital in that situation".

In a call with reporters, Musk cautioned that "there is a lot of new technology here, and so it's possible that some of these satellites may not work".

SpaceX launched 21 orbit missions last year, meaning it could achieve that goal in the next few years - assuming it can build the satellites fast enough. As many as 2,000 satellites will be launched per year, he said.

Elon Musk does not only sell expensive fancy cars. But SpaceX's satellites would be equipped with thrusters and be able to autonomously maneuver around the debris and avoiding collisions, Musk said. The cost of launching each small satellite is pricier than building it, he said. That, in turn, would help the compete fund its next generation rocket, known as Starship, the company hopes to use to fly to the moon and eventually to Mars, he said. Effectively a testbed for SpaceX to gain experience building an operating rockets made out of steel, Starhopper is unlikely to ever move beyond low-speed, low-altitude hover tests.
