Bill implementing Brexit deal to be introduced in early June

Jeremy Corbyn

A new vote on an exit deal proposed by Theresa May now has a date: the week of June 3-the same week that Donald Trump begins his controversial state visit to the country.

The House of Commons has rejected May's divorce deal three times but has, as yet, been unable to agree on an alternative path.

The Conservative MP said there was no "logic" in the move, which was announced after last night's Brexit talks between Mrs May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

A spokesman said Theresa May had made clear the government's "determination to bring the talks to a conclusion and deliver on the referendum result to leave the EU".

"The factual position is if MEPs are elected and (the British) parliament has not approved a withdrawal agreement bill which has achieved royal assent by June 30, they will take their seats", May's spokesman said.

After a marathon Cabinet meeting ministers agreed to continue the cross-party efforts but stressed it was "imperative" for a Brexit deal to get through Parliament by the summer recess.

She turned to Labour last month in the hope of finding a way through, but the party is insisting on a close trading relationship with the European Union that many Conservative MPs reject. It seems absurd to bring it back.

"No leader can bind his or her successor so the deal would likely be at best temporary, at worst illusory", said the letter.

"What she (May) is working to do is to get a deal passed as soon as possible", the spokesman said.

The letter said the Prime Minister can not bind her successor, so any agreement with Labour would be "at best temporary, at worst illusory". Keir Starmer and Tom Watson have estimated that up to 150 Labour MPs would refuse to vote for a Brexit deal that did not have another referendum attached. May has been urged by senior members of her own party to abandon the talks.

Labour have called for a permanent and comprehensive customs union with the EU after Brexit, meaning there would be no internal tariffs (taxes) on goods sold between the United Kingdom and the rest of the bloc.

Signatories include potential leadership contenders Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab.

May and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn sat down for talks again on Tuesday ahead of further discussions between the government and opposition on Wednesday.

Theresa May has set the start of June as the next Brexit flashpoint, publishing legislation to implement the UK's exit from the European Union in a desperate last roll of the dice to end the political paralysis.

"We believe that a customs union-based deal with Labour will very likely lose the support of Conservative MPs, like us, who backed the Withdrawal Agreement in March (in many cases very reluctantly), and you be unlikely to gain as many Labour MPs to compensate", they said.

"I talked to colleagues and some who voted for it last time now think it's dead and will vote against it this time".
