Bank of England keeps rates at 0.75 per cent

No rate changes from Bank of England

Carney said the Brexit uncertainty was keeping the appropriate level of interest rates artificially low for now.

The vote was 9-0 to hold at 0.75 per cent and to keep the asset purchase program unchanged.

The Bank warned the fillip is to fade fast with growth expected to slow to 0.2% over the second quarter as the United Kingdom faces Brexit uncertainties.

"The underlying path of GDP progress seems to be barely stronger than beforehand anticipated, however marginally under potential", the BoE mentioned.

Britain is now due to leave the European Union by October 31 after two delays were triggered by MPs rejecting the divorce deal Prime Minister Theresa May had struck with the bloc. "Extra typically, there remained combined alerts from indicators of domestically generated inflation, and the price of ready for additional data was comparatively low", the BoE mentioned, including it continued to imagine Brexit would go smoothly.

The markets are forecasting just one interest rate increase by 2021. Investment will probably fall for a few more quarters, but the bank raised its forecast for investment growth through 2021.

As expected, the Bank kept interest rates on hold at 0.75% at its latest policy meeting.

The British pound headed for a fourth consecutive day of gains on Thursday, buoyed by signs of a possible breakthrough in Brexit talks ahead of a central bank meeting.

Its tightening stance contrasts with the position of the US Federal Reserve, which last night said it saw no case for moving rates in either direction, and faces pressure to lower interest rates from President Donald Trump.

"Brexit-related uncertainty has led to a reduction in business investment and an increase in stockbuilding", the institution said in its outlook document.

Updated Bank of England forecasts show the central bank expects inflation - now 1.9% - to exceed its 2% target in two and three years' time, by a similar margin to what it predicted in February.
