American explorer says record-breaking deep dive "opening the door for science"

James Cameron emerges from the Deepsea Challenger submersible after his successful solo dive to the Mariana Trench

An American man by the name of Victor Vescovo has descended to the deepest point in the ocean, ever reached by a human being.

Vescovo's team made a total of five dives into the trench over the course of the expedition, during which the team reportedly may have discovered four never-before-seen species of amphipods. According to the CNN, the expedition team stated that they plan to test these samples to check how much plastic gets ingested.

They also discovered brightly colored rocky outcrops that were possibly created by microbes on the seabed, according to the BBC.

"It is nearly indescribable how excited all of us are about achieving what we just did", he said in a release after the completion of the dives. It's part of the Five Deeps Expedition, which is charting the ocean's five deepest areas.

"There were some small, translucent animals", gently moving about, Vescovo said.

His dive took him 16 metres lower than the previous deepest descent in the trench in 1960. "I think it is a wonderful part of human nature that makes us want to push ourselves to the limits, which has helped propel us as a species to where we are now".

There are now at least five giant garbage patches located in the North Atlantic, the South Atlantic, the North Pacific, the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

The team also reportedly found a plastic bag and several candy wrappers.

Now Victor Vescovo has broken the record for the deepest dive - by an extra 11m.

The only two other people to reach these depths was in 2012 by filmmaker James Cameron in his submersible, the Deepsea Challenger, and Lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss scientist Jacques Piccard of the US Navy in the Trieste a deep submarine in 1960.

Their odyssey on the submersible vessel The Limiting Factor are being filmed for the upcoming Discovery Channel series "Five Deeps Expedition".

The United Nations estimates 100 million tons of plastic waste already occupies the world's oceans and large volumes of microplastic have been discovered in the intestinal tracts of deep-dwelling ocean mammals, UK's Telegraph newspaper reported.

Mr Vescovo's latest dive is part of the "Five Deeps expedition", where he is attempting to explore the deepest parts of all five oceans. "This vehicle is effectively a reliable elevator that can transport us to any depth, in any ocean". The group is using a submersible called Limiting Factor to complete its challenge.
