Alleged Christchurch shooter Brenton Tarrant charged with terrorism

Christchurch mosque attacks: suspect charged with 'terrorist act'

"An additional murder charge and two additional attempted murder charges have also been filed".

Commissioner of Police Mike Bush said a charge of engaging in a terrorist act under section 6A of the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002 has been filed.

Police said they had met survivors and victims' families Tuesday to explain the additional charges.

The man, a suspected white supremacist, faces 51 charges of murder and 40 of attempted murder.

The man accused of carrying out a mass shooting at a New Zealand mosque faces new charges, including one count of engaging in a terrorist act, according to law enforcement officials.

As the case is before the courts no further commentary will be made by police, Crown Law or the Christchurch Crown Solicitors office on the charges, Bush said.

The attack was the deadliest mass shooting attack in New Zealand.

Tarrant is expected to reappear in court on June 14.

"Police are committed to providing all the support necessary for what will be a challenging and emotional court process to come for the victim's families and survivors of the attack", they said.

During the attacks, 42 people were killed at the Al Noor mosque, seven were killed at the Linwood mosque and two died later in hospitals.
