64MP and new 48MP image sensors announced by Samsung

With the 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 and the 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM1, Samsung expands its 0.8μm image sensor lineup. The ISOCELL Bright GW1 is Samsung's first 64MP camera module, and the brand also rolled out an updated variant of its existing 48MP solution in the ISOCELL Bright GM2. Samsung smartphones have been, for a couple of years, at the top of the list when it comes to imaging quality, fighting head to head with Huawei, Apple, Google, Sony, and the others. It does that by merging four pixels into one while the color filter is descrambled for full-resolution 64-megapixel shots in good lighting. This is the highest resolution image camera sensor available in the market for mobile devices. Samsung states that with Tetracell, the GW1 can produce bright 16MP images in low light environments and "highly detailed" 64MP photos in brighter settings. Additionally, the GW1 also supports real-time high dynamic range (HDR) for richer hues. Since the pixel size is similar, the new 64-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor will be physically bigger in size and will be able to capture more light. The dynamic range of a conventional image sensor is around 60dB while that of the human eye is typically around 120dB.

After that, the most likely suspect for a 64MP sensor is the Samsung Galaxy S11 (or S20, if Samsung decides to follow typical phone naming conventions), which we'd expect to see in February 2020. This one also features Tetracell technology that will massively improve shots in low-light environments and a remosaic algorithm. The built-in Super PD allows sharper results, better PDAF, and full HD video recording at 480fps. Samsung has also adopted DGC and Super PD technology for the sensor.
