3 die when sightseeing planes collide in Alaska

The passengers were off the cruise ship Royal Princess

The sightseeing planes were carrying tourists from the cruise ship Royal Princess, the Associated Press reported.

The other plane had five people aboard, and he says they are unaccounted for.

Ten passengers were pulled from the wreckage of the planes. The plane was returning from a trip to the Misty Fjords National Monument.

The Taquan Air flight was sold through Princess Cruises, the company said.

The Federal Aviation Administration's Allen Kenitzer says the two planes collided mid-air.

According to the FAA, the aircraft "collided in mid-air under unknown circumstances".

Princess Cruises confirmed that the pilot of a de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver and all four passengers were killed in the collision with a de Havilland Otter DHC-3 just after 1pm., Monday (local time) near the town of Ketchikan.

At first report, 10 people were accounted for, according to the Coast Guard. The conditions of the six injured victims were not immediately known, he said.

Spokeswoman Mischa Chernick had no other information on other passengers and referred questions to the Alaska State Troopers.

"From what's been reported, 10 people are said to be on the beach nearby with injuries, and we are still searching for the rest", Coastguard Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios said.

'In a remote area such as this, given our limited resources, we rely on our partner agencies and appreciate the support that good Samaritans have rendered to this point, ' said Capt. Stephen White, Coast Guard Sector Juneau commander.

Plane crashes are not uncommon in Alaska.

A total of 16 people were on the two planes.

"The amount of people aboard the aircrafts is unconfirmed at this time".

Jerry Kiffer of Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad told KRBD radio that the DeHavilland Beaver and Otter both were in the water when rescue crews arrived at the scene.

Multiple posts on Facebook indicated that at least one of the floatplanes was a part of a guided tour, in which several cruise ship passengers were participating.
