Well-wishers Donate $330,000 For Boy Thrown Off Balcony By Stranger

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda thegrio

Witnesses said Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, pushed or threw the 5-year-old boy on Friday morning from the third-floor balcony of the mall's interior to the first floor, almost 40 feet below, Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts said in a news conference on Saturday, April 13.

"He was enjoying a day at the Mall of America with his mom and friend on Friday morning when a stranger maliciously grabbed him and threw him over the 3rd floor balcony for no apparent reason".

"That's a pretty high fall", Bloomington Police Chief Jeffrey Potts said at a news conference Saturday in Minnesota, describing the scene and his reaction to it.

A witness at the Bloomington mall told WCCO that a woman was screaming that someone threw her child from the third-floor balcony. He said she was screaming, 'Everybody pray, everybody pray. "Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge, '" Brian Johnson said.

For these past charges, Aranda was banned from the mall through July 2016.

Police said the 24-year-old man is not known to the child, or the child's family.

Police officers gave the child first aid along with witnesses, Potts said. He's still receiving care.

Potts called the situation "horrific" and said the department was keeping the boy and his family in their "thoughts and prayers". He said the suspect was located at the transit station just outside of the Mall of America.

"Police officers have to deal with so much, so many kinds of things, but I can tell you that this is the kind of incident that they don't see very often", Potts said.

In a separate incident three months later, Aranda reportedly threw ice water and tea at a woman in a mall restaurant when she declined to buy him food, CNN reported.

Aranda has been involved in incidents before at the Mall of America, one resulting in an arrest, Potts said.

An employee from the Bare Minerals store went on to tell police that Aranda had "walked into the store, and without saying anything, swept his hand across a display table, knocking off and breaking two containers of lip gloss valued at $18.00 each and three shot glasses valued at $2.00 each", the outlet reported.

The Tribune also notes that "Court records show that Aranda has a history of convictions for misdemeanor offense". He was banned again from the mall until December 2017.

WTVR reports that in August of 2015, "witnesses saw Aranda smashing computers on the floor in the Minneapolis library, causing approximately $5,000 in damage, according to a 2015 complaint".
