USA measles outbreak raises questions about immunity in adults

Half of Europeans wrongly believe vaccines often cause serious side-effects

Measles is an extremely contagious virus that lives in the nose and throat mucus of infected individuals and is often transmitted to others through coughing and sneezing.

No deaths have been reported but 66 patients were hospitalized.

There have been 43 confirmed cases in MI since March of 2019.

During his campaign the following year, the then-Republican presidential candidate pushed for children to receive smaller doses over longer spans of time after calling current recommendations "monstrous combined vaccines".

The biggest outbreaks are centered in ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities in Brooklyn and Rockland County.

"The resurgence of measles is of serious concern, with extended outbreaks occurring across regions, and particularly in countries that had achieved, or were close to achieving measles elimination", Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Deputy Director General for Programmes at World Health Organization, said in a statement earlier this year.

The disease was declared eliminated from the U.S. in 2000, which meant it was no longer continually present year round, but health officials say that sporadic outbreaks do still occur from travellers coming from countries where measles are more common.

Mr Azar directed his comments at some parents who have chosen to leave their children unvaccinated due to the unscientific claim that vaccines cause illnesses such as autism.

"Vaccine-preventable diseases belong in the history books, not our emergency rooms", U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a briefing.

According to the CDC, as many as one out of every 20 children with measles develops pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young kids. Yet experts emphasize that vaccines are safe and the best tool available to prevent measles.

You also considered protected if a laboratory confirmed you had measles or are immune to them or were born before 1957. USA public health officials have blamed the current outbreak in part on rising rates of vaccine skepticism that have reduced measles immunity in certain communities. The suffering we are seeing today is completely avoidable.

"They have to get the shot", he said speaking to reporters outside of the White House on Friday.

'We've seen in Jersey how easy it is for misinformation to spread across social media, ' she said. Another 11% had received one or more doses of measles-containing vaccine; two shots are needed to be fully vaccinated.

- New York City officials said some 21,000 people have received the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine in affected areas since the outbreak began in October.

For travellers to outbreak areas overseas, the CDC recommends adults consider getting another dose of MMR unless they have proof of receiving two prior doses, take a blood test showing immunity, or were born before 1957.

Health officials are now urging any unvaccinated residents to get the MMR vaccine.

Gaps in vaccination coverage in the United States and around the world in recent years have resulted in lower immunization rates, and many countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa are experiencing large measles outbreaks.
