United States records 695 measles cases, highest since elimination in 2000

Some 626 individual cases of measles have been confirmed in 22 states between Jan. 1 and April 19 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

US measles cases in 2019 have climbed to their highest level in 25 years in a resurgence largely attributed to misinformation that is turning parents against vaccines.

While political will for immunisation across the region is high, World Health Organization said African Vaccination Week 2019 is a reminder for countries to renew their commitments and redouble efforts to achieve universal access to vaccines.

"Outbreaks of measles in Madagascar and Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo underscore the need for increased investments in immunization as a fundamental part of strengthening primary health care systems", she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that measles is a highly contagious disease that accounts for 13 per cent of all vaccine-preventable deaths in children younger than 5 years in Africa, infecting nine in ten people who are not vaccinated.

No fatalities have been reported this year, but that doesn't mean to not take proper precautions. There were 963 cases in 1994.

Next came France and Britain, with more than 600,000 and 500,000 unvaccinated children, respectively, during the same period.

The number of cases is likely to go even higher.

While the Senate had first sought a bill that would have removed the philosophical exemption for all required childhood vaccines, both chambers ultimately agreed to move forward with the House bill that focused only on the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine - also known as MMR. Just being in the same room as someone with measles can lead to infection if you are not immune.

The measles vaccine, which first became available in the 1960s, is considered safe and highly effective, and because of it, measles was all but declared eliminated in the U.S.in 2000. That beats the previous high of 667 in 2014. It is now spreading in outbreaks in many parts of the world, including in the United States, Europe, the Philippines, Tunisia and Thailand. Scared of the side effects of vaccination, many parents chose to opt out. "It's not so easy to discern what is real and what is not". Measles symptoms may include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and a rash of red spots. However, a very small fraction of those infected can suffer complications such as pneumonia and a risky swelling of the brain. The CDC recommends for all Americans above age 1 to get vaccinated.

The CDC said some 71 of these cases occurred during the second week of April. "When we do not get vaccinated, we put our friends, our relatives, our neighbors, our classmates and other fellow New Yorkers at risk".

The largest outbreak is in New York City, centered in a predominantly Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn.

These are the first confirmed cases of measles in the county this year.

The contagious nature of the disease coupled with global travel and communities with low vaccination rates have all contributed to the spike in cases being seen in the U.S.

Earlier this month, city officials ordered mandatory vaccinations in four ZIP codes in Brooklyn and threatened fines of up to $1,000 for noncompliance.

The state Department of Health said that 4% of Washington K-12 students have non-medical vaccine exemptions.

There have been three measles-related deaths reported in the US since 2000, the last one in 2015.
