Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus Orders Open In Europe, China

There's no word yet about the likely delivery times of the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus in European markets.

It hasn't even been two months since Tesla unveiled the long-awaited $35,000 Model 3, but it's already been removed from the online configurator, relegating it to off-menu ordering, like a weird Jamba Juice smoothie.

The announcement reverses Tesla's announcement on February 28 that the $35,000 model could only be purchased online. However, it comes at a bit of a discount - on the Model 3 range, Autopilot used to be a $3,000 option, but its mandatory inclusion only adds $2,000 to the car's bottom line.

So what will happen to the Standard Range going forward?

In a blog post, the electric vehicle maker outlined the changes that include making the Model 3 Standard only available by phone order or in store.

The electric auto maker plans to keep taking online orders for the Standard Plus Model 3, which starts at $39,500 and is now the lowest-price option available to digital consumers, along with higher-end models.

After the federal tax credit available on its cars halved January 1, Tesla has dropped prices, added features, streamlined its model lineup, and introduced new lower-priced options for the Model 3, including the long-promised $35,000 base Model 3 Standard Range. It now costs $39,500, with Autopilot included.

While many auto companies offer leasing options on new cars Tesla's model bucks the trend in a very unusual way. Leasing options were also provided for the newest Tesla. United States customers can choose from 10,000, 12,000 and 15,000 mile annual usage options, depending on their budgets and driving. Lessees will not be able to purchase the vehicle at the end of the lease period. They'll have to call or visit a store instead, and the auto won't come with Autopilot.

The Standard will have a range limited by 10%, and several features from the Standard Plus will be removed via software including Tesla's onboard music streaming service, navigation with live traffic visualization, and heated seats. Interestingly, Tesla said lease customers won't get the option to buy back their vehicles at the end of the term, because "with full autonomy coming in the future via an over-their-air software update, we plan to use those vehicles in the Tesla ride-hailing network", Tesla wrote.
