Scientists celebrate 1st black hole image

Astronomers have published the first reconstructed image of a black hole, from the center of galaxy Messier 87.

On 10 April, the world saw the first ever clear and direct image of the Black Hole.

Scientists said the event horizon of this black hole - the point beyond which everything that enters is consumed by it - is as large as our solar system.

The image of the dark circle surrounded by a ring of hot gas made history. If - like M87 is - the black hole is in the middle of a brighter region of glowing gas, the gravitational bending causes a shadow to be made.

But the idea resurfaced in physics in 1916, when Albert Einstein revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos with his general theory of relativity. In a post by the lead singer of popular Taiwanese rock band Mayday, the black hole was turned into the surprised face of a feline.

The first picture of a supermassive black hole has been finally captured by scientists, making it one of the biggest space breakthroughs. This boundary is known as the event horizon. In this way, the physicists were able to tease out the black hole's signal from lots of noise. Increasing the number of instruments that can operate at any one time, despite those considerations, will give the EHT a much broader range of times that it can capture data.

Black holes are extremely dense celestial bodies containing such strong gravitational fields that even light can not escape their pull.

But many more people couldn't help but see the eye of Sauron from "The Lord of the Rings" in the black hole. You have to eliminate time and space and light.

Just seconds after the image was released, many took to Twitter to share hilarious memes of the black hole - and all the things it reminded them of.

The peculiarities of black holes also make them easier to observe. The volume of a sphere (assuming its density doesn't change) is proportional to the cube root of its mass: double its mass and it only increases in size by 26 percent. So far, only "40 or 50 very good cases of black holes" have been detected, says Dr. Impey, even though they are thought to be very common and lie at the center of every galaxy. Data from EHT confirmed this hypothesis and thus another aspect of general relativity.

"We have achieved something presumed to be impossible just a generation ago", said astrophysicist Sheperd Doeleman, director of the Event Horizon Telescope at the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian.

This story has been corrected to show that the black hole is located in the M87 galaxy, and not the Milky Way. The idea has been debated, refined and expanded upon for more than a century.

Cosmologists believe black holes are born when a colossal object, like a supersized star, dies and collapses in on itself. Black holes are the universe's most powerful vacuum. It is unclear what physical processes generated such massive objects so early in the evolution of the cosmos. Indeed, the likelihood was that a single telescope capable of seeing M87 in action was decades away from fruition.

The image was created using radio astronomy.
