S.Korea kicks off 5G network services

US telco Verizon rolled out its 5G services on April 3 a week ahead of schedule. Its customers with unlimited data plans in parts of Minneapolis and Chicago can now get speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second on a limited number of phones for an extra

According to market speculations, South Korea recognized itself as the first nation to debut 5G, but US mobile firms did not agree to this, claiming that they had rolled out 5G services in limited regions as early as previous year.

The carriers of 5G services from South Korea said that 15,000 buyers have already subscribed to the LG Uplus 5G service, and more than 10,000 users have subscribed to KT company's offer.

But South Korea's government says Korean companies launched their services for some customers before Verizon. SK Telecom together with KT and LG Uplus were expected to launch their 5G service on Friday but they have launched it earlier on Wednesday instead, just hours before Verizon's 5G network went live.

Although Korea claims to be the first country to commercialize 5G services, some experts are questioning if there was a proper reason to advance the launch date from April 5.

Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 + arrived in February, but these two smartphones are not the final version of Samsung's flagship for 2019. The service was launched ahead of the United States, Japan and China.

Meanwhile in the US, Verizon is offering the Moto Z3 with a 5G Moto Mod.

"For the first time ever, customers can access a commercial 5G network with the world's first commercially available 5G-enabled smartphone", Verizon said in a statement.

Countries are racing to build 5G networks that will be crucial for future tech such as driverless cars. Sometimes, it can also offer 100 times faster speeds.

Samsung was the first to unwrap a 5G phone in February when it unveiled the Galaxy S10 5G and a almost US$2,000 folding smartphone, putting the world's top smartphone maker by volume in pole position in the 5G race, some analysts say.
