Omar supporters rally to protest Trump visit

Democrats say Ms Omar was taken out of context when she referred to the attack as 'some people did something'

But Ilhan Omar meets all of those same criteria and is a devout Muslim prone to saying crankish things about Israel, "the Benjamins", and the supposedly suspect loyalties of supporters of the Jewish state.

US President Donald Trump has doubled down on his attack on Muslim congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

Ilhan Omar, a Democratic member of U.S. Congress, is victim of "fabricated controversies" but it has galvanized support for her, believes an American activist and a friend of Omar. "It has to stop".

After the call though, the video disappeared as a pinned tweet at the top of Trump's Twitter feed, but it was not deleted.

Pelosi, who was travelling in London, issued a statement saying she had spoken with congressional authorities after Trump's tweet "to ensure that Capitol Police are conducting a security assessment to safeguard Congresswoman Omar, her family and her staff". "This is particularly concerning given the president's visit to my home state of Minnesota on Monday".

The comments were taken out of context however.

Minnesota has the largest concentration of Somalis in the nation, and most of those are in the Minneapolis area.

"I have had some problems with some of her other remarks, but not with that one", he said. "I think that is wrong, I think it's beneath the dignity of the office".

On Friday, Trump tweeted a misleading video splicing together comments Omar made last month with footage of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Democratic 2020 candidate Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) struck a similar tone, when he said that Omar "won't back down to Trump's racism and hate, and neither will we".

A crowd of protesters from CAIR, an advocacy group for Muslim-American civil rights, awaited the president's arrival at the company's base. They wanted those professing to stand with her against Trump to defend her *by name* to show that they won't be intimidated politically into keeping their distance from her. Pete Buttigieg initially posted something generic about Trump's video... And now, the president has accused her of trivialising 9/11. Almost one in three Somali-Americans live in the state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and between 42,400 and 55,200 people - about 1 percent of the population of the state - is of Somali heritage, according to recent census data. The video takes an excerpt from a speech Rep. Omar gave at a banquet hosted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), in which she describes the attacks as how "some people did something", cut together with footage of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon burning.

Omar has been the target of threats in the past. Those four words came about 15 minutes into a 20-minute speech, in which Rep. Omar was talking about the discrimination Muslims face in America, where their religion is too often equated with violence. "My love and commitment to our country and that of my colleagues should never be in question".

Sanders was referencing a previous controversy sparked by Omar speaking out against the influence of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee lobby group in USA politics.

A man from upstate NY was recently charged with making death threats against her.

The president and his son, Donald Trump Jr., began criticizing Omar last week for remarks made about the 9/11 attacks.

On Saturday, CAIR condemned the president's comments on social media, calling it a "life-endangering" tweet from a president who uses "shocking imagery" to potentially incite violence against a sitting Congresswoman while "exploiting a national tragedy" at the same time.

"I'm concerned about it and the notion that, if your thinking is different from the president's, you become a target".
