Nvidia releases three Ray Tracing showcases for GeForce GTX and RTX GPUs

Nvidia Delivers Ray Tracing Driver for Previous-Gen Pascal Cards, New Demos

You can download the new graphics driver from Nvidia in order to enable this functionality, but keep in mind that "basic RT" effects are limited to just Pascal GPUs, and the GTX variants of its Turing cards, such as the GTX 1660 Ti and GTX 1660 (as well as laptops with equivalent GPUs).

Nvidia's graphs provide some insight even if they aren't realistic use case scenarios for GTX gamers hoping to get a taste of ray tracing.

The Geforce 425.31 Game Ready driver is available for 64-bit Windows 7 and Windows 10 OS and supports all Geforce graphics cards since Geforce 600 series.

For the unfamiliar, ray tracing is created to bring enhanced lighting and shadow effects to game environments, making them look even more realistic.

In terms of performance, Nvidia provided some benchmarks for all the supported GPUs using various games.

Nvidia's Turing architecture features dedicated silicon up to the task of real-time ray tracing called RT Cores. The GTX 1080 Ti, for instance, hit an average of 30 frames per second, and while that might pale in comparison to something like the RTX 2080's average of 65.7 frames per second with DLSS turned on, it still isn't bad for 1440p gaming with DXR.

Depending on the game and the complexity of the ray tracing it uses, faster GTX hardware is sometimes viable.

NVIDIA is hosting several images that allow you to adjust the slider, as shown above, to compare what different scenes look like with ray tracing and DLSS turned on versus having them disabled.

It's a neat video that breaks down the various ray tracing technologies into consumable chunks, including ray-traced ambient occlusion, shadows, real-time reflections, and global illumination. First announced three weeks ago, Nvidia's latest Game Ready driver, out today, will allow everyone with a 6GB GTX 1060 upwards to take advantage of all the shiny shadow and reflection enhancements in games such as Metro Exodus, Battlefield V and Shadow of the Tomb Raider now only enjoyed by their Nvidia RTX cousins. And while there are now only three games featuring ray tracing effects, NVIDIA has released three tech demos for you to try. The reason NVIDIA states is that the GeForce 16 series cards with Turing GPU architecture can utilize both Floating Point and Integer cores for ray tracing rendering since it has a lot to do with integer maths and even though they don't feature RT cores or Tensor cores, they can still deliver better performance due to such GPU side upgrades.

This post originally appeared on Tom's Guide. At the very least, you'll be able to see what the effect is like at home, on your own display, before investing in expensive new hardware. It also released a few RTX tech demos for Atomic Heart, Justice and Relfections. Still, it will likely be many years before DXR becomes a required feature in games. Or as Nvidia puts it, there are now "tens of millions of DXR GPUs".

Nvidia explains ray tracing in a video released Thursday, just in time for a new driver for GeForce GTX GPUs and new demos demonstrating the technology, according to a press release.

Still, if you want to try out DXR on a GTX 10-series or 16-series card, now you can.
