A 37-year-old man from Narre Warren South has since died in hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries, Victoria Police said in a statement.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper, from Victoria's Homicide Squad, described the victims" injuries as "horrific'.

Chapel Street was home to a number of popular nightclubs and the shooting on Sunday occurred while many people were still out.

Police are yet to make any arrests over the incident and are investigating whether a black Porsche SUV seen leaving the area is related to the shooting.

Bloodstained clothing and bullet casings littered the street outside the entrance to the second-storey Love Machine nightclub early on Sunday.

The Seven Network TV station said that a security guard at the club had no idea a shooting had happened and there was no panic inside the venue, which was still open.

One woman posted to social media to let her family and friends know she was safe after she witnessed the shooting.

"Please if anyone is out at clubs please go home now".

"The exact circumstances are still being established", police said.

She first heard about the shooting on the morning news and called on tougher gun laws.

Police have launched an investigation in the incident and people are being told to avoid the area and have urged anyone with video footage of the incident to contact them.

Mass shootings in Australia are rare. "Australian voters care about safety, but the reality is that we have many thousands of illegal guns in the hands of criminals all over the country", news.com.au quoted Drew as saying.
