More than 100 people arrested in London climate change protests

Demonstrators during a Extinction Rebellion protest in Parliament Square in London

The ongoing demonstrations comes as part of attempts to force the Government to declare a climate emergency.

The demonstration was organised by an global group called Extinction Rebellion which hopes that it will "bring London to a standstill for up to two weeks".

As well as bringing traffic to a standstill at Marble Arch, Parliament Square, Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus and Waterloo Bridge, protestors armed with banners "swarmed" rush hour traffic to prevent vehicles moving for seven minute intervals.

Police have arrested more than 100 environmental protesters overnight as the climate demonstrations that brought chaos to central London enters its second day.

On Monday, as thousands of demonstrators clogged the streets of central London to trumpet their concerns about climate change, some went even further, gluing themselves to street furniture.

Extinction Rebellion said it aimed to cause more than £6,000 of damage so they could be tried by a jury in Crown Court.

On Monday morning, a group of demonstrators with trees, plants and solar panels in tow barricaded Waterloo Bridge, one of five locations being targeted by environmental campaigners in the city as part of the protest.

"We need to disrupt the system that through no fault of its own, is geared to destroy our planet", the group said.

Emergency services have been made aware of the plans, said the group. "What's incredible about this is for 30 years you have just had that closing up of public space - "you can't do this, you can't do that, you've got to finish then".

The arteries of a great commercial centre are its transport links and London's were clogged yesterday as climate protesters blocked streets.

Extinction Rebellion wrote to Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday outlining their demands and asking for face-to-face talks, warning that they will escalate their disruptive actions over the coming weeks unless the government acts.

Last night police imposed conditions on the protesters, restricting them to gathering in the area around Marble Arch. "Obviously, sitting down on Waterloo Bridge is a serious disruption to the community", he said.

The campaign group said that "over 100 fearless rebels" had been arrested, some willingly.
