Million Rock 'n Play Sleepers Recalled by Fisher-Price

All models of Fisher-Price Rock N' Play sleepers recalled after infant deaths

Fisher-Price has issued a recall for all Rock 'n Play Sleepers following reports of deaths when infants roll over.

Consumers who have a Rock 'n Play Sleeper can contact Fisher-Price for a refund or voucher.

The recall affects all models of Rock 'n Play Sleepers, of which 4.7 million have been sold at major retailers in the USA for $40 to $149.

Now, Fisher-Price says that since the product's introduction in 2009, over 30 infant fatalities have occurred in Rock 'n Play Sleepers.

The recall notice came days after Fisher-Price and the U.S. CPSC jointly issued an alert warning parents to stop using the sleepers when their infants displayed the capacity to roll over.

The recall comes one week after Fisher-Price and the CPSC issued a statement alerting parents and families to stop using the baby sleeper improperly due to at least 10 deaths that occurred after infants rolled over in the product.

In a statement, obtained by PEOPLE on Friday, Chuck Scothon, general manager at Fisher-Price, said a "child fatality is an unimaginable tragedy". "When parents purchase a product for their baby or child, many assume that if it's being sold in a store, it must be safe to use".

Now, the CPSC announced the recall of 4.7 million Fisher-Price sleepers across the United States. The product was manufactured in China.

The CPSC said parents should never add blankets, pillows, stuffed toys or other items to places where babies sleep - cribs, bassinets, play pens or inclined sleepers.

"This product is risky and I urge parents and caregivers to stop using it right away", said Ben Hoffman, M.D., chairperson of AAP's Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention Executive Committee.

Earlier this week, Consumer Reports published an analysis on the product and said it could be linked to up to 32 infant sleeping deaths. But given the number of deaths, and expert medical advice that babies should sleep on firm, flat surfaces, there were growing calls for the product to be recalled. "We need to step up efforts to assure safety in products before they go on store shelves or into our homes".
