Messenger will finally come back to the Facebook app

Facebook planning to add Messenger to main app again

It's what might be happening with Messenger, though, that's most intriguing, as a New York Times report from January said that Facebook would soon be unifying Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp through the company's "underlying technical infrastructure" for security purposes.

When Facebook moved Messenger out of the main Facebook app, lots fumed. But apparently, it's going to return home.

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean a public comeback of the app's "Chats" section is right around the corner.

Software engineer Jane Manchun Wong was the first to bring the feature to light, and she's made similar discoveries in the past. As of now, when you open Facebook app and try to revert to a chat message, you will be either redirected to the Facebook Messenger app or if the user hasn't installed it yet, the user will be redirected to download and install it. The New York Times cited sources within Facebook as saying that while the services will remain as their own apps, the tech behind all three will be unified. Researcher Jane Manchun Wong was the first one to spot the new feature under the testing phase. While you'll be able to chat with Facebook friends using text, you'll still need the main Messenger app for other things like phone calls, video chats, sending photos, posting reactions, etc. If Facebook unites the three apps, each platform would have the end-to-end encryption that WhatsApp now has, which "protects messages from being viewed by anyone except the participants in a conversation", according to the Times.

Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp are merging chat features. It appears it's now backtracking on that and looking to roll chats back into the main Facebook app.

Facebook has commented on the feature as per The Verge, but it seems to be a boilerplate response.
