Measles outbreak sparks quarantine orders at 2 Los Angeles universities

Unvaccinated students in LA will be BANNED from classes for 21 days amid growing measles outbreak

More than 300 students, faculty and staff at UCLA and Cal State University, Los Angeles were under quarantine while health officials work to determine if they have been vaccinated, the universities said.

In a letter to students and professors, UCLA president Gene Block said the university was notified on Monday that a student had contracted measles.

Cases of measles in the United States have reached a 25-year high, sparking sweeping efforts by authorities to contain the virus. Only one student involved in the quarantine lives on campus and arrangements had been made to remove the individual from the dormitory, though UCLA did not give specifics of those arrangements to CNN.

More than 200 university students and staff at UCLA and Cal State LA have been ordered into quarantine after potentially being exposed to the highly contagious disease.

Those who couldn't prove they had been inoculated had been quarantined, it said.

Recently, the USA health Agency had reported a record number of measles cases, 695 cases of illness across the country.

Currently, 106 staff and 550 students are under quarantine orders from the Department of Public Health and have been told to stay home and avoid contact with others as much as possible.

It also said that other measles exposures may have occurred this month at Los Angeles International Airport and at several restaurants near Glendale, The Times reported.

Measles symptoms include high fever, a cough and a rash.

"Ninety percent of people who are not immunized or haven't had measles before, when they're exposed to measles are likely to get measles", Ferrer said.

There is no current risk of measles at the above venues at this time, Los Angeles County health officials reported.

Meanwhile, state public health officials on Thursday urged Californians to make sure they have been vaccinated against measles before traveling, especially to global locations.

As of Friday, the school told CNN that approximately 50 people were still under quarantine and would remain there until they could provide proof of vaccination or until the 21 day isolation period has expired. The state recorded 38 measles cases as of Thursday; there were 11 around the same time a year ago, said Dr. Karen Smith, director of the California Department of Public Health. There were 11 cases in total in the same period past year.

KAREN SMITH: You have a lot of people in very close contact to one another, and measles is extremely good at spreading in those circumstances. "That increase is part of a global trend seen over the past few years as other countries struggle with declining vaccination rates and may be exacerbating the situation here", the CDC said.

County health officials on Friday said that 215 workers at the library, including some students, were sent home under quarantine orders, and 183 of them remain under quarantine orders. "Make sure you and your family are fully vaccinated before traveling internationally".

Around the country, lawmakers in California, New York, Washington state and OR have responded to the outbreak by moving to crack down on exemptions to vaccinating children.
