Luke Walton and Lakers mutually agree to part ways

Hall-of-famer Magic Johnson stepped down from his job as Lakers president earlier this week

Ultimately, former Lakers President Magic Johnson and GM Rob Pelinka arranged to fly Lonzo back to L.A. before he underwent any sort of procedure, thus avoiding a potentially catastrophic miscommunication. Johnson announced his resignation prior to the Lakers' season finale against the Portland Trail Blazers. The team called it a mutual agreement.

Walton finishes his tenure with a 98-148 record. The former Golden State assistant never led Los Angeles to the playoffs, even with the arrival of LeBron James last summer. Ball then reportedly returned to Los Angeles via arrangements made by the team without having surgery.

"This franchise and the city will always be special to me and my family", Walton said in a statement.

Walton's Lakers went 37-45 this season and rumors of a coaching change persisted throughout the disappointing year.

And Walton might not be out of work for very long.

Walton said he was grateful to team owner Jeanie Buss for the chance to coach the team, where he won two championships as a player.

The Hall of Fame point guard was upset with the team's defense and sluggish start but later told the Los Angeles Times and ESPN that Walton would not be fired barring something unforeseen. "They say opportunity is everything in the league and they gave me that right from the jump".
