Luke Walton a frontrunner for Kings job after Joerger firing

Kings Vlade Divac Dave Joerger

The Kings moved quickly overnight to reach a new agreement with general manager Vlade Divac, recommitting to a relationship that began when the global basketball legend first donned the team's uniform more than 20 years ago.

Despite Joerger engineering an improbable 39-win season, Divac is using the muscle of his new contract extension through the 2022-23 season to consolidate power around him, league sources said.

According to Wojnarowski, recently extended general manager Vlade Divac is expected to dismiss the coach in a face-to-face meeting later today. The Kings finished ninth in the West behind point guard De'Aaron Fox, winning their most games since 2005-06.

One potential candidate to replace Joerger is Luke Walton, The New York Times reported.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Dave Joerger's time in Sacramento will come to an end on Thursday. But for now it adds to the uncertainty around one of the league's most confounding teams.

And according to Sacramento-based National Basketball Association insider Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Kings have their sights set on embattled Lakers head coach Luke Walton.

Sam Amick of The Athletic reported on Thursday morning that Divac agreed to a four-year contract extension with the franchise.

Kings owner Vivek Ranadive offered unqualified support for Divac.

Joerger finishes with a 98-148 record with the Kings over the past three seasons.
