Listeria linked to deli meats and cheeses

Deadly listeria outbreak linked to deli meats cheeses

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says listeria infections have been reported in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and NY state.

Eight people in four different states have been reported sick from listeria with one person, from MI, dying.

The affected people all reported eating different types and brands of products, including meats and cheeses, purchased from and sliced at deli counters at many different retail locations, the CDC says.

As of April 15, 2019, 8 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes have been reported from 4 states. It's also more risky for the very old, young children and newborns, as well as people with immunosuppressive conditions such as leukemia and AIDS, or those being treated by chemotherapy or radiation, which can also suppress the immune system.

Officials from the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Food and Drug Administration have combed through records that state inspectors collected from delis where sick people ate, but so far, a common product has not been found.

Consumers should clean refrigerators, kitchen countertops, utensils, and other surfaces that touch deli-sliced products.

At this time, health officials are not advising that consumers avoid eating products prepared at delis, or that retailers stop selling deli-sliced products. One death was reported in MI. The Listeria lawyers of Marler Clark have represented thousands of victims of Listeria and other foodborne illness outbreaks and have recovered over $650 million for clients.

Customers are advised to store opened packages for only three to five days. These groups of people should avoid eating lunch meats, cold cuts, or other deli meats - unless they are heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Farenheit or steaming hot just before serving, the CDC says.

People with invasive listeriosis - meaning the bacteria has spread beyond the gut - can experience symptoms of headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions in addition to fever and muscle aches. Among pregnant women, it typically causes only a fever and flu-like symptoms; however, it can increase the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature delivery.

Listeriosis is caused by the bacteria Listeria and is usually the result of eating contaminated food. Infection is treated with antibiotics.
