Lakers, Luke Walton finalize divorce everyone saw coming

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Head coach Luke Walton has left the Los Angeles Lakers two days after Magic Johnson resigned as the team's president of basketball operations. The conversations didn't go very far, however, as it was obvious to both sides that the Lakers had planned to fire Walton before Johnson abruptly stepped down on Tuesday night.

Shortly after the news broke, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was asked about the move and gave his thoughts on Walton, his former assistant coach and good friend. However, it has since been reported Walton was essentially fired and hoped to remain with the team.

The writing pretty much has been on the wall for a while, but Luke Walton no longer is head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Walton couldn't win with LeBron James but the rumors are they know just the man to get this team back to the playoffs. Assistant general manager Brandon Williams also was let go. "They did everything right, I'll say that".

Through it all, the Lakers were 20-14 after beating the Warriors in Oakland on Christmas Day, the game in which James was initially injured.

The Lakers medical staff was under scrutiny as a litany of injuries to key players plagued the team this season.

Before hiring Joerger in 2016, the Kings interviewed Sam Mitchell, Vinny Del Negro, Mike Woodson, David Blatt, Mark Jackson, Jeff Hornacek, Nate McMillan, Patrick Ewing and Corliss Williamson.

Stylistically, Walton is considered a flawless fit for the uptempo system the Kings unleashed on the league this season.

Kerr strongly endorsed Walton on Friday after the Lakers announced he would not return next season.

"I want to thank Jeanie Buss and the Buss family for giving me the opportunity to coach the Lakers". Walton's 246 games in charge were the most by any coach in the tumultuous near-decade since the franchise's last championship in 2010.
