Kane sustains 'significant' ankle injury

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min

Spurs confirmed on Thursday that Kane suffered a "significant lateral ligament injury to his left ankle" during their Champions League victory over Manchester City on Tuesday, with a timeline for his return unknown. "Investigations are ongoing and he will continue to be assessed by our medical staff over the coming week", said the team in an official statement.

Kane was sidelined for almost two months in January when he damaged ligaments in the same left ankle in a Premier League defeat by Manchester United at Wembley and was out for a month last season with a similar injury to his right ankle.

While the Spurs head coach admitted that Kane would most likely miss the rest of the season, he could make an appearance if his side have reached the Champions League final in June.

"He was so upset after the game - it was a hard moment for him", he added.

There was a further blow for Spurs as the club said Kane's England team-mate Dele Alli sustained a fracture in his left hand in the win over City.

The second leg of their Champions League tie against City is on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium.

We are going to do everything to recover him as soon as possible but there is only five weeks of the season to recover.

Kane suffered a similar injury earlier this season against Manchester United in January which kept him out for just over a month. He damaged ligaments in the same ankle in January, which led to him missing almost two months and seven games.

Players such as Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen have previously carried the goalscoring burden during Kane's string of absences and will need to step up again.

While he always seems to recover and come back fitter than before, the regularity with which Kane damages the ligaments in his ankles is a growing concern for both Tottenham and England fans.
