Google's Drone Food Delivery Service Will Debut In Australia This Week

Google’s Drone Based Delivery Service Will Launch In Canberra This Week

Wing, owned by Google's parent company Alphabet, will deliver takeaway food, coffee and medicines by drone to about 100 homes in Canberra. Google's drone delivery service has been given the green light to operate in Canberra.

Wing's service has seen around 3,000 deliveries to households for 18 months. The company says for now Wing's delivery service will only be available to "a limited set of eligible homes in the suburbs of Crace, Palmerston, and Franklin".

Wing was spun out of Alphabet's X research division in July previous year to become an independent company within Alphabet and is part of the Other Bets division.

Australia's aviation authority gave Wing permission to launch a commercial service after examining its safety record and operational plans.

Wing had said in December it would launch its first European delivery service in Finland in the spring of 2019.

To get the products, users will be required to order stuff via Wing's app and the order will be delivered to users' doorsteps via drones.

If you live in Canberra why not drop by Wing's Australian website and just register, you never know whos going to be next!

To address resident complaints from previous trials, Wing has developed a new quieter drone that is slightly slower but less noisy.

The service has collaborated with a couple of local businesses such as Kickstart Expresso, Capital Chemist, Pure Gelato, Jasper + Myrtle, Bakers Delight, Guzman Y Gomez, and Drummond Golf. Wing's promotional videos are dubbed with plenty of voice-over and music, but you can't actually hear the noise made by the drones as they travel over neighbourhoods.
