Report: Former ND, NFL running back arrested on child abuse charge

On Tuesday, former National Football League running back Cierre Wood was arrested for first-degree child abuse following the death of his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter.

KLAS-TV was the first to report the arrest.

According to KVVU in Las Vegas, Wood already faced charges of first-degree child abuse/neglect.

La-Rayah Davis was found unresponsive Tuesday night and was rushed to the hospital.

Wood is being held at the Clark County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

In a court hearing on Thursday, prosecutors said an autopsy revealed a large liver laceration (per News3LV).

A standout at Notre Dame, Wood spent the 2017 season on the Als' roster after being acquired from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He also caught 52 passes in his college career for 384 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Cierre Wood, 28, has worked with New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans.

In January 2014, Wood was signed by the Baltimore Ravens who released him that August. His last couple of seasons in professional football have been spent north of the border in the Canadian Football League, where he was now a free agent.
