EU27 Leaders Agree Brexit Extension - Summit Chair Tusk

Europe's 27 better able to reach agreement than UK alone- PM

"I know the whole country is intensely frustrated", she said. She urged members of Parliament to take stock and "reflect" over a 10-day Easter break that starts on Friday. This is our national duty as elected members of this House.

Consensus, however, was in short supply.

Jeremy Corbyn said Labour would continue to engage "constructively" in the negotiations which he described as "serious, detailed and ongoing", but warned ministers would have to compromise if they were to succeed.

And there was little solace for Mrs May on her own side of the House of Commons, as pro-Brexit lawmakers from her Conservative Party accused her of capitulating to Brussels.

Former Brexit secretary David Davis insisted that no progress had been made in Brussels and that pressure on Mrs May to quit as PM will increase, telling the BBC: "I think what is likely to happen is the pressure for her to go will go up".

May, who returned in the early hours of Thursday after lengthy and hard talks with EU leaders in Brussels, addressed a crowded chamber in the Houses of Parliament to report on the outcome of her talks with the EU Council.

The agreement mean Britain will not crash out of the bloc on Friday and will give Mrs May more than the three months she had asked for to build a parliamentary majority behind the withdrawal treaty she negotiated with the European Union a year ago.

"They're not trying to be amusing, but I think it's totally appropriate given that, the way Brexit has gone, said NPR's Frank Langfitt on All Things Considered".

May's government now has time to ratify the deal agreed with European Union leaders in November previous year, to rethink its approach or to stop the entire Brexit process, he said.

Britain has already started planning for the polls, but May told reporters that she hoped she could still get her deal agreed on by May 22 and avoid taking part.

But there is also scope for further delay, according to Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, which directs the EU political agenda.

Like many things Brexit-related, the extension was a messy compromise that left many unsatisfied. French President Emmanuel Macron was less receptive, saying an extension can not be guaranteed without Britain's assurance not to disrupt the EU.

The Prime Minister said she was satisfied with the flexible extension to October 31, which keeps alive her hope the United Kingdom might leave by June 30.

The extension to Article 50 - the mechanism that notifies when Britain will leave the European Union - does not mean negotiations will reopen between the bloc and the UK.

Two European officials say EU leaders are offering to allow Britain to extend Brexit until October 31 and are awaiting the U.K.'s response.

A Labour spokesman said the talks would continue, but Downing Street warned talks with Labour to end the Brexit deadlock will not continue "for the sake of it".

She said: "We have to use this time to make sure that we deliver the Brexit we are all looking for, that we work closely with the European Union and that they are genuinely helping to make sure we do deliver on the referendum - there won't be any changing our minds about that".
